This summer, Brindley Engineering sent 2 groups of current and future leaders to a leadership course conducted by Echelon Front. Echelon Front’s mission is to educate, train, mentor, and inspire leaders and organizations to achieve total victory. Echelon Front offers unmatched solutions in leadership, strategy, innovation, management, team building, contingency planning, and crisis management developed and proven in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams.

We sat down with those leaders to find out what they learned. This Q&A comprised all the individuals who attended the training course – this article is the result of a true group effort. This is part 1 of a series on BE leadership.

Q: Why is investing in leadership important?

A: To have an experience with others on our leadership team is so valuable. Our team bonded. Some takeaways were that it made us aware of what we envision good leaders to look and act like in our organization. It also showed us what we need to improve on. We also realized that it will likely take us baby steps to implement our learning. And to give ourselves some credit, we are doing some things right too! We took personal and professional lessons away. We are family so it’s all a bit blended for us.

Q: What were your takeaways from the training?

A: We realize that there are some things we can apply to our everyday at BE.

  1. Keep ego in check.
  2. You can say the right thing but if you don’t look or act the right way it may not work. Body language is important.
  3. Leadership concepts are easy but doing them is not. Be accountable.
  4. Communication is key.
  5. Taking care of people you are in charge of rules the day.
  6. Reflect instead of deflect emotion.
  7. Leadership starts with relationships. Build relationships.
  8. Letting go of ‘I have to do it all myself’ mentality. Delegate.
  9. Showing ownership. We are a team. Everyone has a stake in our collective success.
  10. Let your team help plan things so they can take ownership in it.

Q: What makes a great leader?

A: Leadership is not about being in charge but about taking care of those you are in charge of and trying to bring the best out of them.

Q: What are some things that you as a leaders are more aware of now?

A: There is a huge importance of balance to leadership. When to step in vs. when to let people solve the problem by themselves.

Q: What does High Performance mean to you?

A: When you can achieve success under extraordinary and/or difficult circumstances. We succeed as leaders when our vision inspires and attracts others to work as hard as we do. It is when we can get things done through others or empower our teams to achieve success.
