Cross-Laminated Timber Design: Structural Properties, Standards, and Safety  Structural Engineering Handbook, 5th Edition

Brindley Engineering Structural Engineering Consultant adds two titles to his name.

LISLE, IL May 26, 2020 — Today, Brindley Engineering, one of Chicago’s world-class engineering firms in capital and maintenance projects, reliability initiatives and construction solutions, is proud to celebrate the publication of Cross-Laminated Timber Design: Structural Properties, Standards, and Safety by McGraw Hill, authored by Mustafa Mahamid, a structural engineering consultant for the company.

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is a new construction material in North America that Mahamid believes will have a lasting impact on the industry. The book is a comprehensive look at the materials and spans structural, architectural, environmental and sustainability topics related to it.

“I believe cross-laminated Timber will be the future of the timber buildings in North America and in the world where timber is used as a construction material,” said Mahamid.  “As this is a very promising construction material, I want readers to learn the basics in CLT design and specifications as related to their respective fields.”

Mahamid started working on CLT at Brindley Engineering on a research project and wanted to learn more. With input from industry experts in the field his curiosity was peaked, and he was on a mission for extended knowledge.  “This book was developed by a great team who all offered their expertise input on the various topics covered in the book,” said Mahamid. “As an educator, I felt there is a need for a go-to reference in CLT that could be a textbook at one point taught in schools.”

“Mustafa is one of those people who does more in a year than most do in a lifetime. He is an undergraduate and graduate level engineering professor, sponsors PhD students, works with Brindley Engineering, is a role model raising his children, and supports his wife’s professional track, all while writing Engineering textbooks and manuals in his free time,” said Brindley Engineering founder and president, Tom Brindley. “We celebrate Mustafa’s success and are proud of his accomplishments.”

As an engineer with a doctorate degree, I have done research in some areas and I learned things that I thought would not necessarily apply in day-to-day practice,” said Mahamid.  “At Brindley Engineering I was able to apply many of my research skills in R&D related to actual projects. Brindley is a special place for an engineer to work.

This book authored by Mahamid is titled, The Structural Engineering Handbook, 5th Edition, also by McGraw Hill, published in 2020. The handbook covers a long list of topics in structural engineering. Mahamid co-authored five chapters and served as the sole editor for the entire 5th edition of the handbook. For over 50 years, this internationally renowned handbook has been the go-to reference for structural engineering specifications, codes, technologies, and procedures.

The Handbook is very comprehensive and covers a wide range of expertise in structural engineering,” said Mahamid.  “I am happy that it is updated and can serve as a main reference for students, young engineers, engineers taking their license exams, and engineers being exposed to new areas in structural engineering.”

Featuring contributions from a variety of experts, the Handbook has been revised to align with the codes that govern structural design and materials, including IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 37, ACI, AISC, AASHTO, NDS, and TMS. Concise, practical, and user-friendly, this one-of-a-kind resource contains real-world examples and detailed descriptions of today’s design methods.

Mahamid has a BS in Civil Engineering from Eastern Mediterranean University, a MS in Structural Engineering from Bradley University and a Doctorate in Structural Engineering from University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Mahamid loves to travel, has a strong interest in music from different cultures and is an avid reader of history and politics. Currently, Mahamid and his family reside in Haifa, Israel where his wife is pursuing her medical residency.
